The UK’s 2024 ORTOVOX OFF-PISTE AWARENESS TOUR launches in association with outdoor and snowsport specialist retailer ELLIS BRIGHAM and THE SKI CLUB OF GREAT BRITAIN, including a number of evening talks with HAT (Henry’s Avalanche Talk) founder, Henry Schniewind, a series of online webinars and practical outdoor avalanche transceiver training sessions.
The talks travel to London, Manchester and Glasgow with an additional new talk at The Snow Centre, Hemel Hempstead, added to the programme; Henry is also speaking at this year’s Kendal Mountain Festival (21-24 November). The transceiver training takes place on Wimbledon Common, Sandbanks in Poole and Sale Water Park, Manchester.

Henry Schniewind said, “We don’t know what this winter has in store for us. Last season, because of a very stable snow pack in most of the Alps, we saw a drop in avalanche accidents, but I think that’s also down to an increase in awareness, training and equipment that continues to evolve.
“Our main goal continues to be the prevention of incidents and we put a huge emphasis on providing the means for applying the knowledge that many people have – so they can reduce the number of simple errors. Most accidents are triggered by people who had the basic training needed to avoid the danger, but they just didn’t apply it. If you don’t apply the knowledge, it doesn’t matter how much you know.
“That’s why the HAT approach has saved lives, because it’s not just education. It’s also all about the application of that training and the tools we provide to enable skiers and snowboarders to use it and make off-piste and ski touring ‘acceptably safe.’”
