Born in Yosemite, outdoor lifestyle apparel brand ROYAL ROBBINS (RR) has been committed to protecting the environment since its inception in 1968. RR has announced lower-impact practices for Spring 2023 that support the brand’s overall CLIMATE GOALS FOR 2025. Since material production makes up the largest portion of a product’s environmental footprint, RR selects lower-impact fibres to help reduce waste, chemical use, water use and greenhouse gas emissions.
Specific highlights from the materials in the Spring 2023 collection are:
- 62% of the styles are made with materials that contain 50 %or more lower impact fibres, including: preferred cotton, recycled polyester, certified forest materials, hemp and preferred wool.
- Reducing the carbon footprint of its best-selling men’s shirt series by switching to carbon-zero TENCEL™ Modal fibers, which are certified as CarbonNeutral™ products by Natural Capital Partners.
- 88% of cotton-based styles are made with preferred cotton (including organic cotton), which is grown in partner programs with farmers to help reduce environmental impact through improved water, land and chemical management practices.
- Unbleached and undyed fabrics in select styles, as seen in the Vacationer and Hempline styles. This new colourway uses up to 80% fewer kilowatt-hours (kWh) energy, 80% fewer litres of water, and 75% fewer chemicals than a traditional piece dyeing process.
- Expanding the use of recycled materials with 80% of poly-based garments made from recycled polyester.
- Many trims (locker loop, zipper pull, cord locker loop, and woven labels) are made from recycled polyester which has lowered the brand’s use of energy and fossil fuels.
Additionally, Royal Robbins aims to use lower-impact alternatives to conventional fibres with targets that include:
- 80% recycled or bio-based polyester by 2025
- 100% preferred cotton by 2025
- 100% FSC or PEFC certified man-made cellulosic by 2023
- 50% certified, traceable wool by 2025
All of these initiatives support RR reaching its 2025 climate goals. By 2025, the company has set a target to reduce 40% of its emissions in the company’s owned and operated locations (including offices, warehouse locations and retail stores). By 2025, Royal Robbins also has a target of 50% reduction in emissions per product produced (considering categories, purchased products & services and transport & distribution).
