Mountain running company Ourea Events has unveiled an expanded programme of events for 2022. The calendar includes two additional races, a training weekend and the return of a dedicated conference for the adventure sports sector.
Expedition Race Training Weekend
The Ourea Events Expedition Race Training Weekend will provide the prelude to a busy year of mountain running races. Hosted at Rydal Hall near Ambleside, the two-day event will be held from 26-27 March.
Attendees will hear from past participants of the Montane Dragon’s Back Race® and the Cape Wrath Ultra® and pick up plenty of invaluable knowledge from An informed group of running experts who will be delivering sessions on subjects such as nutrition, navigation, and training.
There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, meet fellow runners and enjoy a group run on the fells. The weekend is open to all and aimed at anyone currently entered or planning to enter either the Montane Dragon’s Back Race® or the Cape Wrath Ultra®.
Northern Traverse and Lakes Traverse, 2-6 April
New to the Ourea Events stable of events is the Northern Traverse, a 190-mile self-supported ultra-race that will follow Wainwright’s Coast to Coast route from St. Bees on the west coast, crossing the north of England through three National Parks.
Finishing at Robin Hood’s Bay on the east coast, it takes in iconic mountains, valleys, moors and over 16,000 feet of ascent. The Northern Traverse is one of the most spectacular ultra-races in the world.
The Lakes Traverse starts with the Northern Traverse in St. Bees and crosses the entire Lake District, finishing in Shap. Participants will have 28 hours to complete the race, from the western coast through Ennerdale, Borrowdale, over Grasmere Common and Fairfield.
Then through Patterdale, over Kidsty Pike, along Haweswater and into Shap. With a total of 12,000 feet of ascent over 60 miles, it’s a challenging yet beautiful ultra.
Shane Ohly of Ourea Events said, “The Northern Traverse and Lakes Traverse both deliver an English expedition style race that perfectly aligns with the Cape Wrath Ultra and the Montane Dragon’s Back Race. We’re delighted to add them to the Ourea Events portfolio of challenging multi-day races in spectacular landscapes, delivering some of the very best mountain running experiences that the UK can offer.”

Following the Northern and Lakes Traverse, the Ourea Events team will focus on the return of some well-established races:
- SILVA Great Lakeland 3Day™ 30 April – 2 May
- Cape Wrath Ultra® 22-29 May
- Montane Dragon’s Back Race® 5-10 September
- Salomon Skyline Scotland® 2022 provisional date 17-18 September
The Ourea Events year will conclude with the Adventure Sports Events Conference on Friday 18 November. Returning for a second year after very positive feedback following the inaugural event, the conference will be a chance to be informed and challenged by a selection of expert speakers.
It will be held at the Castle Green Hotel, Kendal in conjunction with Kendal Mountain Festival; full details published later.
