Klean Kanteen, the sustainable drinkware and food solutions brand, is the title sponsor of Scotland: Ocean Nation. It’s an expedition in which Cal Major, world-record adventurer, veterinarian, and passionate ocean advocate, aims to be the first person to circumnavigate Scotland by stand-up paddleboard this summer. It will celebrate incredible ocean ecosystems, explore human connection to the ocean and investigate the importance of protecting ocean biodiversity as it relates to the climate crisis.
Phil Ellwood, MD at Klean Kanteen UK, said, “As a member of 1% For the Planet, a Certified Carbon Neutral and a B-Corporation, it’s clear Klean Kanteen’s mission closely aligns with Cal’s passion to explore and protect the ocean. We understand the importance education plays in raising awareness about environmental issues, and we’re honored to support Cal in her endeavor to make a positive change in a place important to her.”
Visiting islands, Cal will explore the incredible underwater world by scuba and free diving, delving into the importance of these precious ecosystems. She will also engage with the communities and individuals around the coast, exploring how their connection drives them to protect these awe-inspiring places that are threatened by ecosystem destruction, climate change, and plastic pollution.
Cal will be joined by James Appleton, a multiple award-winning photographer, videographer, and filmmaker, who will be on the water in a kayak to document the adventure and bring it to life through an immersive six-part documentary series.
She said, “There has never been a more pressing time than now because 2021 is Scotland’s Year of Coast and Waters which encourages responsible engagement and participation in Scotland’s unrivalled natural ecosystems. Furthermore, Glasgow is hosting the United Nations Climate Change Conference this November, also known as COP26. We’re thrilled to have a value-aligned brand like Klean Kanteen as a title sponsor to help us elevate the importance of ocean protection through exploration.”
Cal has linked up with the Our Seas Coalition in asking for a transition to a highly protected seabed, which provides a nursery ground for many ocean species and sites of carbon storage. She has also created Seaful, a charity aimed at raising awareness for how oceans can positively impact mental health and create more environmental stewards.
