About the Role: We are looking for a skilled engineer to be part of a Research and Development team based in Livingston, UK, who are focused on understanding product performance through the combination of in-field and lab-based testing. We are seeking someone with a solid technical background, hands-on ability, good troubleshooting/problem solving skills and experience in managing projects. 

Responsibilities:

  • Designing, executing and analyzing field and lab-based technology/product tests to generate understanding of materials and products deployed in demanding environments
  • Identifying relevant in-use product failure mechanisms and associated root cause(s) through the application of scientific methods and creative thinking
  • Cross-functional interfacing with various teams utilizing effective verbal and written communication to develop and drive field experimentation
  • Providing expertise globally with cross-functional teams to support new innovations, commercialization of new technologies, as well as exiting commercial products
  • Owning driving, managing and completing projects under established timelines 

Qualifications:

  • Degree or equivalent in Materials Science and/or Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline and minimum 3 years’ experience
  • Demonstrated experience in building partnerships with customers and/or consumers 
  • Demonstrated experience in root cause analysis, particularly for determining the potential impact on product performance (effect) and ultimately evaluating and ideally mitigating failures (cause)
  • Practical experience with materials testing/characterization and test method development
  • Experience designing appropriate experiments and applying statistical data analysis techniques
  • Demonstrated skill in effective technical documentation and communication, including ability to communicate with, and influence globally, partners across both technical and non-technical functions
  • Proven initiative, exhibiting the ability to lead self effectively – including the ability to proactively identify opportunities and gain support to work on projects
  • Demonstrated skill in rapidly assessing complex technical challenges, applying creative problem solving skills, and building an effective course of action
  • Ideally passionate about and possessing first-hand experience of outdoor product performance acquired through participation in outdoor activities
  • The role requires (international) travel up to 10-15% 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with user-based experimentation
  • Experience with flexible composites, polymers and/or adhesives
  • Experience in lamination or textile industry
